These two inner ring suburbs are noted for their preserved period neighbourhoods with grand homes from Victorian, Italianate, Edwardian, Queen Anne and Federation eras and tranquil leafy streets. Lesser know is the area’s leadership of the 1920s temperance movement that still sees both suburbs (and others nearby) as legally dry areas. Also, the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) syndrome leads to regular battles over land planning applications.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Departing from Camberwell Station, the walk traverses the tranquil back streets of the two suburbs to view the multiple layers of the built environment in the area. The focus will be on:
Lunch will be taken in one of the many parks that dot the two suburbs. If wet weather prevails, we will camp in the historic rotunda in Canterbury Gardens. The walk will conclude back at Camberwell Station.
