GVRT Part 8: Merton to Bonnie Doon Walk

This part of the GVRT (Great Victorian Rail Trail) walk is an especially scenic section of this popular rail trail.

GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate, 16 km point-to-point walk on formed track. 

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
From the Bonnie Doon Hotel we will carpool to the start of the walk at Merton. From there we'll walk the Great Victorian Rail Trail to Woodfield, after which Lake Eildon comes into sight. The trail follows the lake shoreline into Bonnie Doon and after passing through town, we cross Lake Eildon on the former 280 metre rail bridge, a highlight of the whole rail trail. We will then have refreshments at the Bonnie Doon Hotel before heading home.

MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 10am for a 10:15am departure from the Bonnie Doon Hotel / Motel car park.

DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: 169 km, 2 hours 11 minutes via Healesville (best option for Eastern/Southern suburbs), or 188 km, 2 hours 24 minutes via Hume Fwy (best option for Western/Northern suburbs).

CAR POOLING: If anyone would like to car pool – get a ride or give a ride – from around your local area please let me know ASAP or at least a week in advance at the latest, as it can take a while to arrange.

FOOD: Carry lunch, snacks and at least 2 litres of water.

APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: Sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and camera. Dress for the weather forecast.
