Jacksons Creek Explorer Walk - Sunbury

Jacksons Creek Explorer Walk - Sunbury
Stratford Close
10:00 – 17:00
Check out this interesting route that leads you out to the site of the Sunbury Rock Festival of the 1970s. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 3: Moderate 12.7 km out-and-back walk (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System). There is a creek crossing early on that would be difficult after heavy rain. The path is overgrown / non-existent in places, and there is the risk of snakes in warmer months. Take care to not fall into rabbit burrows or washout holes (at times quite large). The uneven terrain makes the walk feel a lot more than 12.7 km! ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This pleasant walk starts at Stratford Close, Sunbury and follows Harpers Creek and Jacksons Creek. The walking track doesn't get much use and is not visible in some sections. The scenery is quite varied, with a combination of grasslands, riverside sections and some climbs up to the plateau, which provides some spectacular, expansive views. Lunch will probably be taken at the Billy Thorpe Memorial near the end of the trail. BOOKING: By Friday 22nd May. To register click on Get Tickets. Unsure if you've already booked? Click View my bookings. FURTHER INFORMATION: AllTrails.com: Jacksons Creek Explorer. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 10:35am where the cycling/pedestrian path meets Stratford Close (near the intersection of Nottinghill Rise and Stratford Cl/The Strand).  MAP REFERENCE: Google map maps.app.goo.gl/BHYUR3xbMRMXXRRSA.  DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: 45 km, approximately 1 hour to drive or 1 hour 20 mins by public transport from Town Hall Station. PUBLIC TRANSPORT: GETTING TO THE WALK: Catch the Sunbury line train that leaves Town Hall at 9:14am, arriving at Sunbury at 10:18am, then take the 10:21am #488 Jacksons Hill bus (from Bay B) to Whitechapel Way/Nottinghill Rise (or the Jacksons Hill Terminus/The Strand). AFTER THE WALK: #488 buses to Sunbury Station depart at regular intervals from the nearby Jacksons Hill Terminus/The Strand (e.g. departures at: 2:33pm, 3pm, 3:33pm, 4:13pm). Trains depart regularly from Sunbury Station (at least one every 20 minutes). FOOD: Carry lunch, snacks and a litre of water. APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: Comfortable walking boots/shoes and dress according to the weather forecast. Be prepared for a creek crossing (you may need to remove shoes and socks) and walking on non-formed tracks. LEADER: Alan D. | Email LeaderAlanD@nomads.org.au if you have any questions. Additional voyages - Tall Ship Sailing in Far North Queensland
17 May 2026 08:00 – 28 May 2026 17:00
There are 2 voyages. First one 19-22 May. Second one 24-28th May. You could join either, or do both. Join the tall ship "South Passage", Queensland's sail training ship, for a sailing adventure along the Queensland coast.  Everyone sleeps in a communal cabin, and there are shared toilet facilities, which is a small discomfort to pay for the experience of sailing in the same manner that Captain Cook did. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: A basic level of fitness and dexterity is required to move around the ship while it is moving. You need a spirit of adventure, and embrace working as a team to assist sailing the ship. However, no prior sailing experience is required - you will be trained on the job. At times you might have to be awake at night for up to 2 hours to assist in running the ship. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The ship is named South Passage. She is built on the same lines as a New York Pilot Schooner, and has a total length of 30 metres.  These are both general public voyages so we share the ship with other voyage crew. Roger is one of the watchleaders so you would be in his watch. The destinations depend upon the weather and circumstances, but each day there is the opportunity to step onto an island and explore. Or go swimming or snorkelling. Highlights might include: Rosslyn Bay to Mackay: 1st night Pearl Bay, then Middle Percy Is., then maybe Scawfell or Keswick for the last night before Mackay. Mackay to Townsville, a musician to serenade us at a BBQ on shore at Cape Upstart. We will have a couple of island stops in the Whitsundays: day 1: Mackay to St Thomas or Shaw Is. Day 2 to Whitsunday or Hook Is.. Day 3 to Gloucester Passage. Day 4 to Cape Upstart. Day 5 Townsville. The emphasis is on having a good time and getting a range of experiences – not just hard-core sailing. You will never be bored!  Voyage duration, dates and costs are contained on the flyers. This cost does not include transport to/from the embarkation/disembarkation ports, but includes everything once you are on board including all on-board meals. You need to arrive the day before as we usually have an onshore dinner (not included) the night before departure. South Passage does not have any powered winches, so we rely on your manpower to sweat the lines and do all tasks required to run the ship, in the same manner as the ancient mariners.  Of note, South Passage is a dry ship, and there's no smoking on board. Roger's experience is that you will not miss this since there are so many activities to challenge your senses and keep you occupied. A great chance for a detox.  BOOKING: Bookings are on a first in first served basis. Book and Pay direct to Southpassage through the booking application. Follow these links to the booking form and use the QR code: Rosslyn Bay (near Rockhampton) to Mackay. 19-22 May.  Link to Info |  Booking Link Mackay to Townsville. 24-28th May.  Link to info sheet |  Booking Link Please also click Get Ticket on this page so Roger knows you are planning to attend.  Also contact Roger on Email LeaderRogerH@nomads.org.au since it is such short notice. However you must also make a reservation (Booking) and pay a deposit direct to Southpassage (QR code on the links above).  FURTHER INFORMATION: southpassage.org.au, the official South Passage website. There are other voyages offered that you can book on, however Roger is only sailing on the two above. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: This depends on which voyage you select. Refer to Southpassage information, or contact LeaderRogerH@nomads.org.au for exact details. You have to arrive the day before the voyage departs. We have a welcome dinner (around 5pm) the night before to get to know our fellow sailors. The voyage departs promptly the next morning (boats don't wait!!). All sailors need to be on board by 10pm the night before. Dont book flights back to Melbourne before about 8pm on the day of disembarkation as there might be delays. And also to allow time to get to the airport. DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: A long way!! Best to fly to/from Queensland. This cost is not included in the voyage cost above. Also, do consider how long it takes to transfer from airport to the port. Roger can advise on the best way to get to the embarkation port. FOOD: All meals are provided on board (but not the welcome dinner the night before departure). All dietary preferences are catered for. APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: It is generally balmy. However, if we get some rain it can be cool. A packing list will be provided. LEADER: Roger H. | Email LeaderRogerH@nomads.org.au if you have any questions. 29 May 2026 08:00 – 05 Jun 2026 17:00
**WAITLIST ONLY AT THIS STAGE DUE TO UNPRECEDENTED INTEREST. HOWEVER REGISTER AN EXPRESSION OF INTEREST** Join the tall ship "South Passage", Queensland's sail training ship, for a sailing adventure along the Queensland coast. See Voyage Flyer.   Nomads are not taking over the entire ship, but rather blending in with other members of the general public. However you would all be working together in Roger's watch. She is built on the same lines as a New York Pilot Schooner, and has a total length of 30 metres.  Each day we will find a picturesque anchorage, possibly go for a bushwalk, or go snorkelling. We decide the schedule depending on wind conditions and opportunity.  The emphasis is on having a good time and getting a range of experiences – not just hard-core sailing. You will never be bored!  The voyage is 7 days long and costs $2,128 per person. This includes accommodation onboard the night before the voyage. However you will need to pay a deposit closer to the departure to confirm your place. Payment will be direct to South Passage and not through Nomads. Details of this will be provided later to all interested persons. At present the voyage has not been opened to the public so we have open slather. FURTHER INFORMATION: southpassage.org.au, the official South Passage website.  MEETING TIME | LOCATION: Refer to the Voyage Flyer.   You have to arrive the day before the voyage departs. King's Birthday weekend in Echuca
Spencer St/Collins St
06 Jun 2026 07:30 – 08 Jun 2026 19:30
Enjoy a long weekend of activities in Echuca/Moama over the King's Birthday holiday weekend, from Saturday 6th to Monday 8th June. Echuca and Moama are effectively the same town, within easy walking distance of each other. Echuca is on the Victorian side of the Murray River and Moama is on the NSW side. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Various, depending on the activities undertaken - a range of activities will be on offer. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: We have booked some accommodation in Echuca as outlined below. There are lots of interesting walk options as well as other activities such as a Murray River Boat Cruise. The activities undertaken will depend on the weather forecast and the wishes of the participants. Meals can either be taken in the accommodation (where kitchen and dining facilities are available) or around the town of Echuca (or across the NSW border in Moama), which both have lots of dining options available. It is envisaged that everybody will travel to and from Echuca by public transport, after which all activities will be undertaken within walking distance of the accommodation. If somebody wishes to drive, that's absolutely fine. If you're feeling tired, many dining venues provide courtesy buses to transfer you to and from your accommodation. BOOKING: By Friday 22 May, or ASAP to ensure you don't miss out. Payment will be requested by 22 May, after which refunds can only be provided if somebody is able to take your place. To register click on Get Tickets. VISITORS should purchase a 1-month Temporary Membership (cost $8) prior to booking for this weekend. WAITING LIST: Accommodation is limited, but a Waiting List will be available. If needed, we'll endeavour to book additional accommodation, but it will probably be more expensive. You can also organise your own accommodation and join the group for each day's activities (in which case you should purchase a DAYTIME ACTIVITIES ONLY ticket). BED PARTNERS: A second person can occupy a queen bed at no additional charge. If wanting to share a queen bed with your partner, please specify their first and last name in the PARTNER NAME field, but do NOT purchase a separate ticket for your partner. PAYMENT: No payment is required at the time of booking, but payment will be requested subsequently (you'll be able to use PayID to the leader's phone number, or you can bring cash if you prefer). The prices quoted for each ticket are the expected prices assuming all beds are filled. If some beds are unoccupied, the prices may be slightly higher. CRUISE (optional): Our itinerary will allow you to (optionally) take a 1-hour cruise on a 1923 wood-fired paddle steamer (highly recommended if you haven't done this previously; cost $35 full or $32 concession). If you wish to do that, you should book your own ticket for the Sunday 7 June 10:15am PS Canberra Cruise. We suggest you book the cruise by around 24 May if planning to do it. TRAIN: Book your (extremely inexpensive) train travel on the vline.com.au website (depart Southern Cross at 7:40am on Sat 6 June, depart Echuca at 4:07pm on Monday 8 June). Unsure if you've already booked with The Nomads? Click View my bookings. POTENTIAL ACTIVITIES: The walks and other itineraries are still being investigated, but there are lots of interesting tracks beside the Murray and Campaspe Rivers. See Echuca Day Walks for some potential itineraries. (We'll undoubtedly mix and match various different circuits). There are also many other activities including: Port of Echuca Discovery Centre (admission free) | Echuca Distillery (Gin, Vodka, Agave & Whisky Crafted in Echuca Moama), 555 High St, Echuca | The Echuca Farmer's Markets on Saturday 6th June 8:30am to 1pm in Heygarth St | The Moama Market on Sunday 7th June 8am to 1pm at Kerrabee Soundshell, Moama.  COSTS: ACCOMMODATION: There will be accommodation costs as specified on the ticketing option that you select (unless you're arranging your own accommodation). MEALS: Many group meals will be organised at venues around Echuca, but you will also be able to dine at your accommodation whenever you prefer (for example, most people will probably have breakfast at their accommodation).  TOURS: The optional river cruise costs $35 full or $32 concession - you need to book your own ticket (for the cruise at 10:15am on Sunday 7 June).  TRANSPORT: Daily fares will be capped at $5.70 full or $2.85 concession to anywhere in Victoria (a Myki card will be required). Weekend travel is free for seniors, carers, and those with a disability support pension. (As a Victorian Senior, I was only charged $4 for the return trip). MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 7:20am at Southern Cross Station on Saturday to catch the 7:40am Regional Train to Swan Hill, changing at Bendigo for a Regional Train to Echuca.  MAP REFERENCE: Google map maps.app.goo.gl/E1mPtPFjAH7j6hLY8.  DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: 225 km, approximately 3 hours 20 minutes by public transport. PUBLIC TRANSPORT:  OUTBOUND: We will take the Regional Train to Swan Hill departing from Southern Cross at 7:40am, then change in Bendigo for the Regional Train to Echuca, which arrives at 11:18am. Other options include the Regional Train to Shepparton departing from Southern Cross at 9:16am and changing at Murchison East for a coach to Echuca, arriving at 12:46pm, or the Regional Train to Echuca departing from Southern Cross at 12:02pm, arriving in Echuca at 3:15pm. RETURN: We will take the Regional Train departing from Echuca at 4:07pm on Monday, arriving at Southern Cross at 7:29pm Other options include a Regional Train departing from Echuca at 12:07pm, arriving at Southern Cross at 3:29pm or a Regional Coach for Murchison East departing from Echuca at 3:07pm, then changing to a Regional Train for Southern Cross that arrives at 6:37pm. Note that queen beds/private rooms can be shared between two people for no additional cost. Check-in for all venues is after 2pm, and check-out is by 11am. The Dandenong's Pixie Waltz
Upper Ferntree Gully Station Car Park
09:20 – 17:00
Explore the enchanting Dandenongs on a 16.5 km hike starting from Upper Ferntree Gully Railway Station and ending at Mt Dandenong Hotel, Olinda. Immerse yourself in the Tolkien-like scenery of towering mountain ash and mossy gullies, and visit sights like One Tree Hill and the Doongalla Picnic Ground. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 4: Medium to Hard 16.5 km point-to-point walk (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System), with public transport access at each end. There is quite a bit of climbing, and descending, on this walk, though there are no prolonged climbs. The total vertical climb is 967 m, and total descent is 588 m. The walk is expected to take at least 6 hours. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Is there a more enchanted forest than the Dandenongs? Tall mountain ash stretch to the sky whilst Gondwana ferns decorate the mossy gullies. With such Tolkien-like scenery, the bushwalker soon becomes convinced that pixies must surely live among the ferns. This hike follows little used trails from Upper Ferntree Gully Railway Station to Mt Dandenong Hotel. Mainly on track, with the occasional wombat trail, the route has a total elevation gain of almost a kilometre. Thankfully, not all this elevation comes at once. Rather there's a little uphill, then a little downhill, and so it goes until you reach your destination. On the way there are several sights including One Tree Hill and the Doongalla Picnic Ground, set in an English garden next to an historic homestead. It's probably the most romantic picnic ground you can find. There's also a number of hillbillies who live on the route and if you're lucky to get one talking, you will be spun a yarn about the history of the area. From the end of the walk, a bus will take you back to the start (or to Croydon Station if you prefer) following a charming route that is worth the price of the Myki pass alone. On weekends buses leave hourly. First though, a refreshing beverage at the Mt Dandenong Hotel is strongly recommended.  BOOKING: By Friday 24th April. To register click on Get Tickets. Unsure if you've already booked? Click View my bookings. FURTHER INFORMATION: TrailHiking.com: The Dandenong's Pixie Waltz. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 9:20am at Railway Ave, at the top of the exit ramp (northern) exit of the Upper Ferntree Gully Railway Station (though an earlier start is being considered).  MAP REFERENCE: Google map (starting point): maps.app.goo.gl/H6PaBXCHQGG7dZMD7.  Route Map: TrailHiking.com Dandenongs Pixie Waltz DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: 40 km, 1 hour 10 mins by train from Flinders Street Station.  PUBLIC TRANSPORT:  GETTING THERE: Take the Lilydale line train that departs from Flinders Street at 8:06am and change at Ringwood (on the other side of the platform) to the Belgrave line train, arriving in Upper Ferntree Gully at 9:15am. RETURNING: From the Mt Dandenong Hotel take a #688 bus from Ridge Rd/Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd (Olinda) to either Croydon or Belgrave, then catch a train back to the CBD. The bus stop for Upper Ferntree Gully is in front of the Mt Dandenong Hotel, and for Croydon is in front of Kelly's. Potential PT options: Olinda 3:55pm-5:27pm Flinders Street Station via Upper Ferntree Gully and Belgrave line Olinda 4:47pm-6:17pm Flinders Street Station via Croydon and Lilydale line Olinda 4:59pm-6:27pm Flinders Street Station via Upper Ferntree Gully and Belgrave line Olinda 5:45pm-7:17pm Flinders Street Station via Croydon and Lilydale line Olinda 5:54pm-7:36pm Flinders Street Station via Upper Ferntree Gully FOOD: Carry lunch, snacks and two litres of water.
