Queen's Birthday Walk and Picnic

Take a scenic stroll from Collingwood Station to Bellbird Park for a Queen's Birthday Picnic, then on to Fairfield Station afterwards.
** This event will proceed, but with a limit of 20 attendees, split into two groups of up to 10 per group. The first group will start at 10:04am and the second group at 10:14am. Those who register will be emailed their starting time on Sunday. The group members are asked to please not mingle with the other group(s) in order to comply with current COVID-19 guidelines! **

GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate, approximately 10 km, point-to-point walk with public transport connections, though this is at the Easy end of the Moderate scale. Some sections of the path are rocky or could be slippery after rain, and there are some short, steep sections. It's possible to take shortcuts to reduce the distance and eliminate some hills. The distance to lunch is approximately 6.6 km, and after lunch about 3.5 km. It's also possible to drive to the park for a purely social event, but due to current COVID-19 restrictions you would need to not mingle with the walking groups.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: From Collingwood Station we'll head to Yarra Bend Park via Gipps St, crossing the river to head northwards on the less-travelled side, all the way round to Galatea Point, with views towards Dights Falls from the opposite side of the river. We'll then walk past Studley Park Boathouse and continue beside the Yarra to Bellbird Park.

After lunch, we'll continue beside the Yarra around to the pipe bridge near the Fairfield Boathouse, using that to cross to Fairfield and follow some quiet streets to Fairfield Station.

MEETING TIME | LOCATION:

  • 10:04am or 10:14am at Collingwood Station to walk to the picnic. You will be notified by email which group you are in.
  • David's group will drive independently to Bellbird Park.

MAP REFERENCE:

PUBLIC TRANSPORT: The Mernda line train that departs from Flinders Street platform 1 at 9:48am arrives at Collingwood at 10:04am, and the Hurstbridge line train that departs from Flinders Street platform 1 at 9:58am arrives at Collingwood at 10:14am. After the picnic, you can return via a Hurstbridge line train from Fairfield Station (departures every 20 minutes).

FOOD: BYO Everything – a picnic lunch is recommended as the BBQs will probably not be operating due to post-lockdown COVID-19 restrictions.

APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: Comfortable walking shoes and dress according to the weather forecast.
