BWV Fed Walks weekend based in Trentham

Participation in the annual Federation Walks event is one of the benefits of our membership of Bushwalking Victoria. Bookings for the Federation Walks weekend based at Trentham on 21-22 October are now open. Don't miss this popular annual event that brings together members of our bushwalking communities for a fun weekend of walks and social activities.

GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: 20 different walks are available, ranging from Easy 8 km to Hard 17+ km.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The FedWalks weekend happens in a different part of Victoria each year. This year provides an opportunity for participants to visit sections of the Wombat State Forest that have reopened after the devastation of the 2021 storms. The program this year will include visits to Lyonville Springs, Garden of St Erth, Blackwood township and Mineral Springs, Lerderderg River, Nolan’s Creek Picnic Ground, Balt Camp and Yankee Mine.

The forest offers an extensive network of trails, varying in difficulty levels and length - from steep ascents to rocky descents. It promises a diverse range of terrains for us to explore and a variety of flora and fauna to discover.

There will be free-camping options in Trentham for those who wish to stay overnight on Friday and/or Saturday nights.

BOOKING: ASAP to ensure you don't miss out. This event is open to members of all clubs affiliated with Bushwalking Victoria. The steps for booking are:

  • Check out the BWV Walks Program to decide which walk(s) you would like to do.
  • On the TryBooking Registration page, pay the Registration Fee ($35) then select the walks you wish to do on Saturday, and on Sunday (or select the NO ACTIVITY option if you don't plan to walk on one of the days).
  • Select Get Tickets on this Nomads events listing, so we know who is attending, to help with coordination.

MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 

  • Friday Registration (optional): 3pm-6pm
  • Saturday - Registration from 7am ~ Mustering (for walks) 7:45am-10am (depends on walk) ~ most walks return by 3:30pm
  • Sunday - Registration from 7:30am ~ Mustering (for walks) 7:45am-10am (depends on walk) ~ most walks return by 4pm

DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: 93 km, between 75 and 90 minutes to drive via the M79 Calder Fwy. 

PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Public transport options are available via the Southern Cross / Bendigo V/Line train service to Woodend or Kyneton, plus a bus to Trentham. Myki cannot be used on the bus service - tickets should be purchased online in advance. You may need to travel the night prior to your first walk. Use the PTV Journey Planner to plan your public transport trip.

ACCOMMODATION: There will be room for up to 8 people to camp on the property of a Nomads member who lives in Trentham. The FedWalks group will also probably organise free-camping at the Trentham Sports Ground. Contact LeaderAlanD.thenomadsinc@mail.tidyhq.com if you're interested in a camping option.

FOOD: For your walks, you will generally need to carry lunch, snacks and drinking water. Afternoon tea will be provided at the end of your walk. There are several dining options in Trentham - the Cosmopolitan Hotel is highly recommended. We will organise group dining options closer to the date. There is also a Saturday dinner option organised by FedWalks that you can select when you make your booking.

APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: Comfortable walking boots/shoes and dress according to the weather forecast. Be sure to bring plenty of warm, waterproof layers. Trentham is in the Great Dividing Range and can be several degrees cooler than Melbourne.

This is a paid visitor ticket for non-members, including Meetup members. On check-out you will be asked to provide some basic safety information. Non-members can join the club by clicking on "ANY Membership Required".
