A hard hike that will reward you with breathtaking views of the Yarra Valley. An excellent (possibly mandatory?) training walk for those planning to do the Multi-night backpack in the Victorian Alps in December.
GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 4: Hard 18 km out-and-back hike to the summit of Mount St Leonard (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System). There is an approximately 942M climb to the top. Walking poles are highly recommended (if you use them) for the steep descent, which will be very slippery in places, particularly after rain.
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This challenging trail takes in a large swathe of the north-eastern Yarra Ranges National Park border, taking you to the Summit of Mount Saint Leonard. The hilly trail incorporates a portion of the Bicentennial National Trail. It travels through a mixed eucalypt forest before reaching the peak of Mt St Leonard for amazing views (if not cloudy).
We will meet at the Beechworth Bakery for those who need a quick coffee before driving to the start of the walk.

MEETING TIME | LOCATION: Depart at 9.30am from the Beechworth Bakery in Healesville. From there we will drive to the Donnellys Weir Picnic Area, Road 12, Healesville to start the walk.

DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: 70 km, approximately 1 hour 30 minutes via M3 and Maroondah Hwy, or 80 km via M1 and Maroondah Hwy. There are no public transport options for this walk.
FOOD: Carry lunch, snacks and 2 litres of water.
APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: Solid walking boots and dress according to the weather forecast. Bring layers, including a waterproof layer if the BOM forecast for Healesville indicates any chance of rain.
