Three Day Canoe Trip on the Glenelg River, Nelson Victoria

3 day canoe and camping trip on the Glenelg River from near Dartmoor to Nelson on the Victorian - South Australian Border. An investigative trip for 6 participants in 3 tandem canoes. 

GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: 3 days of canoe paddling in tandem canoes with distances of up to approximately 20 km per day.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This is an exploratory trip with a view to running a larger group later in 2027. This trip aims to explore the logistics, organisation, transfers, equipment hire, costs etc and to develop the canoeing skills of the participants. 

Proposed Itinerary:

  • Day 1 (Fri 25 Sep): Drive to Nelson (Approx 5 hours from Melbourne)
    Overnight accommodation Shared Cabin at Caravan Park or camping at Moleside landing. (TBA)
  • Day 2 (Sat 26 Sep): Canoeing Moleside Landing to Georges Canoe Camp (17.7 km)
    Paddling Time: Approx. 4 to 5 hours.
    Overnight Camping
  • Day 3 (Sun 27 Sep): Canoeing Georges Canoe Camp to Lasletts Canoe Camp (20.2 km)
    Paddling Time: Approx. 5 hours.
    Overnight Camping
  • Day 4 (Mon 28 Sep): Canoeing Lasletts Canoe Camp to Nelson (14.6 km)
    Paddling Time: Approx. 3.5 to 4 hours.
    Lunch
    Return to Melbourne (5 hour drive)

CONSIDERATIONS: To do this trip you need to:

  • Be certain that you are available for the dates and times.
  • Have some basic canoeing experience and be willing to follow instructions and advice.
  • Be comfortable spending time on the water.
  • Organise and carry camping equipment and appropriate on and off water clothing.
  • Organise and carry a minimum of two and a half days of food and water.

NOTES:

  • A canoe skills session will be held on a weekend in August at Fairfield or Studley Park Boathouse for those wishing to brush up on their paddling skills. Date and time TBA.
  • Ridesharing arrangements will be discussed once participants are confirmed.

MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 3pm Friday 25 September in Nelson, Victoria. Specific meeting point will be advised closer to the date.

MAP REFERENCE: Google map: Melbourne to Nelson

DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: 408 km, approximately 4 hour 50 minutes via Hamilton HWY/B140 to Geelong then follow directions to Mortlake, Heywood and Winnap/Dartmoor to Nelson. 

PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Public Transport is not available for this activity. Cars will be parked in Nelson for the duration of the canoe trip. We will be ferried to the launch point by the hire company.

COSTS (approximation):

  • 1 Night Shared Cabin Accommodation in Nelson approximately $25 per person
  • Canoe and equipment hire (paddles, life jackets, waterproof storage) for 3 days $60 per day = $180.00 ($90.00 pp)
  • Canoe company transfer of equipment and participants: $50 (shared between group)
  • Canoe camping fees approximately $7 per person per night
  • Food and fuel costs

APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: Light quick drying synthetics for canoeing (pants/shorts, shirt/tshirt, wind/waterproof  jacket), water shoes, hat, sunnies. Warm attire for camping (track suit pants, tshirt, warm fleecy top, thermals, sox, dry shoes)

FOOD: A detailed, suggested food list for the canoeing/camping days will be provided. Dinner options in Nelson for the first evening include Nelson Hotel Bistro or the Roadhouse.
