One vacancy - Tall Ship Sailing in Far North Queensland
Breakwater Marina
02 Jun 2023 16:00 – 09 Jun 2023 17:00
THERE IS ONE VACANCY (DUE TO A CANCELLATION) FOR THE FIRST PERSON TO PAY THE DEPOSIT. Join the tall ship "South Passage", Queensland's sail training ship, for a sailing trip to and from Townsville with stops for bush walks on the iconic islands of Magnetic, Hinchinbrook and Dunk in June 2023. Participate in sailing the ship, snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, walking on a deserted island, and feeling the wind in your hair. Everyone sleeps in a communal cabin, and there are shared toilet facilities, which is a small discomfort to pay for the experience of sailing in the same manner that Captain Cook did. This trip will be similar to 2022 with some differences. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: A basic level of fitness and dexterity is required to move around the ship while it is moving. You need a spirit of adventure, and to embrace working as a team to assist sailing the ship. However no prior sailing experience is required and you will be trained on the job. At times you might have to be awake at night for up to 2 hours to assist in running the ship. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The ship is named South Passage. She is built on the same lines as a New York Pilot Schooner, and has a total length of 30 metres.  Each day we will find a picturesque anchorage, set foot on an enchanted island off the Barrier Reef for a bushwalk, or go snorkelling. The locations are likely to include Magnetic Island, Orpheus Island, Hinchinbrook Island and Dunk Island.  The emphasis is on having a good time and getting a range of experiences – not just hard-core sailing. You will never be bored!  The voyage is for 7 days, and will cost $1,750 including accommodation of Friday 2nd June. This cost does not include transport to/from Townsville but includes everything once you are on board including all on-board meals. The evening meal on Friday 2nd is a group dinner on shore at your expense.  South Passage does not have any powered winches, so we rely on your manpower to sweat the lines and do all tasks required to run the ship, in the same manner as the ancient mariners.  Of note, South Passage is a dry ship, and there's no smoking on board. My experience is that you will not miss this since there are so many activities to challenge your senses and keep you occupied. A great chance for a detox. Also no naturism is possible. BOOKING: ASAP! Numbers are limited to 18, and will be on a first in first served basis to pay a $200 deposit to South Passage (follow this link to the booking form). This sailing is open to the general public, but Nomads members are being offered early booking, so don't wait too long! Please also click Get Ticket in this event so Roger knows you are planning to attend.   Not sure if you've already registered? Click View my bookings. FURTHER INFORMATION: southpassage.org.au or view the brochure for this event. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: Townsville before 10pm on Friday 2nd June 2023 (boats don't wait). All sailors need to be on board South Passage by 10pm on Friday 2nd June, and the voyage is expected to end at 4pm on Friday 9th June. Further updates will be provided to people who have expressed interest. MAP REFERENCE: Townsville: Google map g.page/BreakwaterMarinaTSV?share. DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: A long way. Best to fly to/from Queensland. This cost is not included in the voyage cost above.  FOOD: All meals are provided on board. All preferences are catered for. APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: It is generally balmy. However, if we get some rain it can be cool. A packing list will be provided. LEADER: Roger H. | Email LeaderRogerH.thenomadsinc@mail.tidyhq.com if you have any questions. Bowling shoes will be provided for all. You will each be able to select a suitable bowling ball to use during the evening, and then can join in with others at any one of the lanes. Do not worry if you are on your own, we will ensure that everyone finds a group to bowl with. You do not need to be experienced in 10 pin bowling. This is all about having fun with like minded people. Depending on the number of bowlers at each lane, you can typically expect to complete up to two games. There will be a small competition with prizes which will be awarded based on the individual scores of the first game.  In order to maintain everyone's privacy, please note that no photographs will be permitted except as advised by the Event Leader on the night. Phones are not to be used during the evening, and we thank you for assisting us with this. Please see the Event Leader if you have any concerns. It would be appreciated if everyone could promptly depart the venue at 10pm. We would welcome the assistance of a few people to help the organisers with packing up after the night. Anzac Day Cycling - Fed Square to Williamstown via the Westgate Punt
Federation Square
10:30 – 16:00
On Anzac Day, enjoy an easy cycle ride from Federation Square for lunch in Williamstown, travelling via Port Melbourne, Westgate Park and the Westgate Punt.  GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy 15 km cycling, mostly on off-road trails. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: We'll gather at the bike racks between Federation Square and the Yarra River. If you wish, you can get a take-away coffee from Flinders Street Station to have while you're waiting for others to arrive. From Federation Square we'll cycle via Southbank to the cycling path beside the 109 tram line, which takes us to Station Pier in Port Melbourne. There we'll turn right and cycle along the coast and through the astonishing Westgate Park - if we're lucky, the pink lake may be truly pink, though this summer has probably not been hot enough for it to show its true colours! Still in the park, we'll pass under the Westgate Bridge to get to the Westgate Punt, which will take us across the river to land near the Scienceworks Museum. From there it's a short ride along the coast to Williamstown, for lunch at Al Porto Vecchio, 175 Nelson Place, Williamstown. After lunch, you can catch a train from Williamstown Station, cycle back to the CBD along the Coastal Trail then Dynon Road (or return via the punt), or take one of the other cycling trails (for example, the Capital City Trail northbound). Note that the Footscray Road Cycling Trail is currently closed, but there's an excellent detour via Dynon Road. BOOKING: By Sunday 23rd April. To register, please click on Get Tickets. Unsure if you've already booked? Click View my bookings. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 10:30am at Princes Walk, beside Federation Square. We'll meet at the bike parking on Princes Walk - Princes Walk runs beside Federation Square between Swanston Street and the MCG. If coming from Flinders Street Station, cross Swanston Street and cycle straight ahead about 200m towards the MCG. You'll see the bike parking on your right (just before the silver public toilets).  If coming from the Federation Square main square, proceed along or beside Swanston Street and take the cycling path immediately after the pedestrian crossing (and just before Princes Bridge). Cycle about 200m towards the MCG and you'll see the bike parking on your right (just before the silver public toilets).   MAP REFERENCE: Melway map X893 grid J10 or map 1B grid Q12 | Google map goo.gl/maps/u9QcMkma1kbuHoDD8. COST: There will be a $5 charge for the Westgate Punt (credit card only, no cash accepted). The lunch cost will depend on what you order. FOOD: We will have lunch at Al Porto Vecchio, 175 Nelson Place, Williamstown.  APPAREL: Bike, helmet and appropriate attire based on the weather forecast. Layers are your best weapon against the vagaries of Melbourne's changeable weather! A spare tube is advisable.
