A series of interconnected walks to check out Warrandyte’s gold mining past. The focal point of our walk will be a memorial cairn that has been erected on Fourth Hill. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 3 Moderate (due to hills and terrain, graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System). The estimated total walk distance is around 9 km. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The first activity will be the circuit walk around Fourth Hill area with ample time to inspect the eight protected sites in this sector. The walk will proceed along the Wildcat Gully and Whipstock Gully Tracks to another circuit walk around the site of the Victory Mine. The area is well sourced with storyboards. Additional walks will be taken along the many interconnecting management vehicle tracks. The first discovery of gold in Victoria was in 1851 at Warrandyte; now an outer suburb. Detailed mining of the area did not occur until other areas in the State were exhausted. Many of the mining sites are available for observation. PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Three bus options are available: #364 (Ringwood Station) / #578 (Eltham Station) / #906 (City via Victoria Pde, Hoddle St then Eastern Freeway) to Warrandyte Rd/Harris Gully Rd followed by a short walk to the entry point. To plan your journey see: transport.vic.gov.au/journey. Weekend travel is currently half price, capped at $4 full, $2 concession & free for seniors. FOOD: Picnic facilities are available, however there are no food or drink shops in the park, so bring your lunch, snacks and at least 1 litre of water if it is a warm day. Our regular monthly social night - this month at the Royal Oak, Richmond.  GRADE: Social.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The Nomads hold a social night each month, where members and guests can enjoy a meal, talk about upcoming events, compare notes on past activities and float ideas on events they would like to see run. The last section of the O'Keefe Rail Trail from Lake Eppalock to Heathcote, visit the Pink Cliffs and a scenic lookout. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate 12.6 km walk. Mostly flat on a gravel rail trail, plus a short uneven walk at the Pink Cliffs. (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System). ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: After meeting in the car park, we carpool to the start of the walk at the O'keefe Rail Trail at Lake Eppalock. We walk along the lake for 1 km, depending on winter rainfall, will determine if the lake water reaches this point. We walk for about 2.5 hours along the rail trail through forest and farm land. After lunch we continue into Heathcote and visit the Pink Cliffs and then drive up to the Viewing Rock Lookout for views over Heathcote and surrounding countryside before returning to town for refreshments at the Commercial Hotel or a bakery before heading home. Participation in the annual Federation Walks event is one of the benefits of our membership of Bushwalking Victoria. Bookings for the Federation Walks weekend based in Portland will open on 1 July 2026.   GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: 20+ different walks are available. The walks are likely to range from Easy 2 km to Hard 18 km. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The FedWalks weekend happens in a different part of Victoria each year - this year it will be based in Portland to do sections of the Great South West Walk. Detailed maps and descriptions of all the walks on offer will be provided.  The Great South West Walk (GSWW) is a 250-kilometer, 12-to-15-day loop hiking trail beginning and ending in Portland, Victoria, offering a diverse, challenging journey through forests, along the Glenelg River, and across rugged coastlines. It's an epic showcase of the natural beauty of far west Victoria. Meander through tranquil forests of the Cobboboonee, enter the limestone gorge of the Glenelg River and the long, lonely coast of Discovery Bay. It winds through the diverse landscapes of Lower Glenelg National Park, Discovery Bay Coastal Park, Cobboboonee National Park and Cape Nelson State Park. Starting from the township of Portland in south west Victoria, the walk takes you on an unforgettable journey across rugged cliffs carved by the Southern Ocean, over remote beaches, past ancient, pristine lakes and through majestic, tall forest. Memorable features include the highest sea cliffs in Victoria, blowholes, Petrified Forest, and seal colony at Cape Bridgwater, historic Cape Nelson Lighthouse, Princess Margaret Rose Caves, Aboriginal heritage places and the beautiful seaside village of Nelson, where the Glenelg River meets the sea. Along the way you’ll discover a diverse variety of plants and wildlife such as koalas, kangaroos, Blue and Southern Right Whales, and a huge variety of native birds, including the Australasian Gannet. The walk is maintained through a partnership between volunteers from Friends of the Great South West Walk and Parks Victoria. Many thanks to those volunteers as well as to the volunteers taking on responsibility for organising this FedWalks program. The Nomads has booked the 4-bedroom Roantree House, 17 Julia Street, Portland for Friday and Saturday nights at a total cost of $721.56. The accommodation cost will be divided equitably depending on how many people are staying in the house.  BOOKING: By 31 August, or ASAP to ensure you don't miss out! This event is only open to members of clubs affiliated with Bushwalking Victoria. Visitors should get a 1-month Temporary Membership prior to booking their tickets. ** PLEASE NOTE: We have temporarily put a hold on joining this group - it's simply too big at present ** Do you enjoy cycling, and are you sometimes free on Fridays? You're welcome to join the Nomads Friday cyclists. ** See Archive - Friday Bike Rides for the upcoming Friday's cycling details (posted on Wednesday night). ** GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Rides are of varying length and difficulty, mostly in metro Melbourne, but sometimes in Regional Victoria. The typical distance is between 30 and 50 km, though there are usually options to either extend or shorten the ride. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Time off on Fridays? Join a small group of Nomads and friends for a leisurely cycle on trails around metro Melbourne, and occasionally into Regional Victoria. Emphasis is on the social aspect, not on breaking world speed records! All rides are designed to either start in central Melbourne, or to start and finish close to train stations. The rides usually start at around 10:30am to avoid needing to travel with bikes on trains in peak hour. We often meet in, or near, a cafe so you can have a coffee prior to starting the ride if you wish. We generally have lunch in a cafe or pub along the way, though occasionally you will need to bring a picnic lunch if there are no suitable options available - in that case the ride description will clearly indicate the need to BYO lunch. The upcoming ride details are usually posted on the prior Wednesday evening at the start of the Archive - Friday Bike Rides document, by which time the weather forecast for Friday is fairly reliable. That way, a ride can be chosen to suit the forecast, for example to keep the wind behind us as much as possible, and to ensure there are bailout train station options if there’s a likelihood of rain. Check out this interesting route that leads you out to the site of the Sunbury Rock Festival of the 1970s. ** BEWARE: There will be bus replacements on the Sunbury line this weekend. Note the slightly later starting time of 10:45am ** GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 3: Moderate 12.7 km out-and-back walk (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System). There is a creek crossing early on that would be difficult after heavy rain. The path is overgrown / non-existent in places, and there is the risk of snakes in warmer months. Take care to not fall into rabbit burrows or washout holes (at times quite large). The uneven terrain makes the walk feel a lot more than 12.7 km! ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This pleasant walk starts at Stratford Close, Sunbury and follows Harpers Creek and Jacksons Creek. The walking track doesn't get much use and is not visible in some sections. The scenery is quite varied, with a combination of grasslands, riverside sections and some climbs up to the plateau, which provides some spectacular, expansive views. PUBLIC TRANSPORT: NOTE: There will be bus replacements on the Sunbury line - replacement buses will run between North Melbourne Station and Sunbury Station. GETTING TO THE WALK: You should aim to arrive at the bus replacement stop outside North Melbourne Station by 9am at the latest to travel to Sunbury. From Sunbury, you will need to catch the #488 Jacksons Hill bus that departs at 10:31am from Sunbury Station (probably from Bay B) to Whitechapel Way/Nottinghill Rise (one stop prior to the Jacksons Hill Terminus/The Strand, where it arrives at 10:43am).  AFTER THE WALK: #488 buses to Sunbury Station depart at regular intervals from the nearby Jacksons Hill Terminus/The Strand (e.g. departures at: 3:28pm, 4:08pm, 4:48pm). Trains normally depart regularly from Sunbury Station (at least one every 20 minutes). FOOD: Carry lunch, snacks and a litre of water. APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: Comfortable walking boots/shoes and dress according to the weather forecast. Be prepared for a creek crossing (you may need to remove shoes and socks) and walking on non-formed tracks. Nomads Financial Members are welcome to attend the May meeting of the committee of The Nomads Outdoors Group.  GRADE: Social. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The Nomads committee holds four online meetings each year, generally on the third Monday in the months of February, May, August and November. The meetings are held online via Zoom, and Nomads Members are welcome to attend (though are not able to vote). A fifth committee meeting is held in person prior to the AGM (Annual General Meeting), which is usually held on the first Tuesday in May. Much of the business associated with running the club is performed via email throughout the year, but the committee meetings provide the opportunity for further discussion, and to formally adopt and record any decisions made within the previous quarter. Additional voyages - Tall Ship Sailing in Far North Queensland

There are 2 voyages. First one 19-22 May. Second one 24-28th May. You could join either, or do both. Join the tall ship "South Passage", Queensland's sail training ship, for a sailing adventure along the Queensland coast.  Everyone sleeps in a communal cabin, and there are shared toilet facilities, which is a small discomfort to pay for the experience of sailing in the same manner that Captain Cook did. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: A basic level of fitness and dexterity is required to move around the ship while it is moving. You need a spirit of adventure, and embrace working as a team to assist sailing the ship. However, no prior sailing experience is required - you will be trained on the job. At times you might have to be awake at night for up to 2 hours to assist in running the ship. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The ship is named South Passage. She is built on the same lines as a New York Pilot Schooner, and has a total length of 30 metres.  These are both general public voyages so we share the ship with other voyage crew. Roger is one of the watchleaders so you would be in his watch. The destinations depend upon the weather and circumstances, but each day there is the opportunity to step onto an island and explore. Or go swimming or snorkelling. Highlights might include: Rosslyn Bay to Mackay: 1st night Pearl Bay, then Middle Percy Is., then maybe Scawfell or Keswick for the last night before Mackay. Mackay to Townsville, a musician to serenade us at a BBQ on shore at Cape Upstart. We will have a couple of island stops in the Whitsundays: day 1: Mackay to St Thomas or Shaw Is. Day 2 to Whitsunday or Hook Is.. Day 3 to Gloucester Passage. Day 4 to Cape Upstart. Day 5 Townsville. The emphasis is on having a good time and getting a range of experiences – not just hard-core sailing. You will never be bored!  Voyage duration, dates and costs are contained on the flyers. This cost does not include transport to/from the embarkation/disembarkation ports, but includes everything once you are on board including all on-board meals. You need to arrive the day before as we usually have an onshore dinner (not included) the night before departure. South Passage does not have any powered winches, so we rely on your manpower to sweat the lines and do all tasks required to run the ship, in the same manner as the ancient mariners.  Of note, South Passage is a dry ship, and there's no smoking on board. Roger's experience is that you will not miss this since there are so many activities to challenge your senses and keep you occupied. There are other voyages offered that you can book on, however Roger is only sailing on the two above. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: This depends on which voyage you select. Refer to Southpassage information, or contact LeaderRogerH@nomads.org.au for exact details. You have to arrive the day before the voyage departs. We have a welcome dinner (around 5pm) the night before to get to know our fellow sailors. The voyage departs promptly the next morning (boats don't wait!!). All sailors need to be on board by 10pm the night before. Dont book flights back to Melbourne before about 8pm on the day of disembarkation as there might be delays. And also to allow time to get to the airport. DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: A long way!! Best to fly to/from Queensland. This cost is not included in the voyage cost above. Also, do consider how long it takes to transfer from airport to the port. Roger can advise on the best way to get to the embarkation port. Sunday morning fitness ride from Fed Square to Hampton/Black Rock and return. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Approx 29 km one way and various distances on the return. Mainly flat. The route includes city paths, bike trails and some road riding. Riders returning to Flinders street will ride approximately 50+ kilometers, depending on their route back to the city. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This is a Sunday morning ride from the city to Hampton or Black Rock return. The ride will focus on steady riding to improve fitness. It will include one coffee stop on the return section and will aim to be fully concluded by late morning. The ride will include bicycle paths and some roads. In sections, riders will have the choice to ride on the road or on designated bicycle paths (Port Melbourne - Black Rock). We will take the path beside the Yarra River to Docklands, link to Lorimer Street then proceed through Westgate Park to Port Melbourne. We will take bike paths along the Port Melbourne foreshore to Beaconsfield Pde. At this point riders can choose to follow the Bay Trail or road-ride to Black Rock. At Black Rock Clock Tower, after a short 5-10 min drink break we will begin our return journey, stopping for coffee somewhere along the way - choices include Hampton, Brighton, St Kilda, or Albert Park. From the coffee stop, riders will choose the most convenient route home via the city, southern suburbs, west, east or north.  Note: If the trip to the Clock Tower is too lengthy we could turn around at Hampton. We will see how long the ride takes to complete.  If the weather forecast is very poor, such as heavy rain or wind gusts, a cancellation email will be sent on Saturday evening by 8:30 pm.  BOOKING: By Friday 15th May. Ride or take public transport home from the CBD. Diverse terrain and sharp suburban ascents define this loop through Melbourne's outer east. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 3: Moderate 11 km circuit walk (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System). UPDATE - on previewing, the length has been reduced. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Diverse terrain and sharp suburban ascents define this loop through Melbourne's outer east. The route offers an eclectic mix of quiet bushwalking tracks and paved footpaths, weaving through pockets of native greenery and local streets. We follow the Mullum Mullum Trail through Antonio Park, Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve, the Schwerkolt Cottage and with Eastlink views. There are few public bathrooms directly on the route, so plan accordingly before setting off. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 11am at entrance to Heatherdale Station.  There is parking south and north-west of the station. Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Our Annual General Meeting, in conjunction with the regular monthly social night. GRADE: Social.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Join us in a private room for the AGM followed by dinner in lieu of our regular social gathering. The first part of this night will involve the formal business necessary to satisfy the requirements of our incorporation as an association, including presentation and acceptance of financial and other reports, and the election of office bearers for the next 12 months. An AGM Information Pack will be distributed electronically to all (then) Full Financial Members prior to the meeting. After this, please stay for a meal or for socialising. Drinks can be purchased at the bar (outside of the meeting room). The pre-ordered meals will be served in the private room at 8pm sharp. Attending online via Zoom: If you wish, you can attend the AGM online via Zoom. Just select "Online - via Zoom" as the "Attendance Mode" when you get your ticket. In any case, the Zoom link will be emailed prior to the meeting to everybody who has registered. BOOKING: BOOKING TO ATTEND: By Sunday 3rd May.
