What's involved in planning a trip to Antarctica?
19:00 – 21:00
A number of Nomads travelled to Antarctica in the summer of 2018/19, and would like to share their experiences with us as well as guiding us through the planning process, and of course showing some pics! GRADE: Social - online presentation via Zoom.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Travelling to Antarctica (the 7th continent) requires a lot of planning, and a lot of cash. But there's more than one way to get there. The presenters will discuss some of the different options, and also make some suggestions on places to visit before or after Antarctica. There will of course be many great photos to view also. They'll also make some suggestions for experiencing some of the magic offered by winter wonderlands such as Patagonia of both Argentina and Chile including Punta Arenas and Ushuaia as part of the experience. Delays can occur on trips like this, which could provide an unexpected opportunity to experience more of those other wonderlands than you had bargained on. BOOKING: By 5pm on Friday 8th October. To register, click on Get Tickets. Unsure if you've already booked? Click View my bookings. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 7pm via Zoom. The Zoom link will be sent on Friday afternoon to those who have registered. LEADER: Garry O. | Email LeaderGarryO.thenomadsinc@mail.tidyhq.com if you have any questions. Online Quiz and Trivia Night - Friday 1st October
19:00 – 21:00
Join fellow Nomads and friends for an online quiz night on Friday 1st October - an evening of fun and socialising from the safety, warmth and comfort of your own home! Bring your food and drinks and get ready for two hours of socialising online. We'll be using the Kahoot program again for the Trivia segment - Richard H. will be your quizmaster. It will be easiest to use two devices to play this - one running Zoom (on which the questions will be displayed), and one that you'll use to enter your answers into Kahoot. (See How to play Kahoot - using One or Two devices for more details). Next, Jason will take over as quizmaster to run a game of Tic Tac Toe ("noughts and crosses"), where you strategically add a nought or a cross if your team answers the question behind the selected slot correctly. If your team gets the answer wrong though, the token of the opposing team gets placed in the slot! Afterwards, if we have time we'll play the quizmaster's favourite game: Wheel of Fortune.   Play starts at 7pm (but if you feel you'll struggle to manage the Kahoot game, you can join in at 7:30pm). Ensure you register for this event in order to receive an email with your link to join on the night! We will be using the online Zoom program plus the TriviaMaker and Kahoot gaming software to run the event. TO BOOK: Click Get Tickets, preferably by midday on Friday 1st October so you get an invitation email on the day with your link to join the game. If you haven't used Zoom before, be sure to register for a FREE Zoom account prior. See: zoom.us/freesignup. You don't need any special software for using Kahoot. TO PLAY: At 7pm on Friday 1st October (or 7:30pm if you're not joining us for the Kahoot game), click on the Zoom link in your invitation email. (Tip: add a reminder in your phone). Once you've joined, sit back and relax. Your quiz and game masters will run all the behind-the-scenes work. Outback Australia Show and Tell

2021 Past Event
Outback Australia Show and Tell
19:00 – 21:00
This presentation on Outback Australia is the next in our series of online presentations during Victoria's lockdown #6. The presentations to be shown include: photos of Soldiers in the Outback; photos and stories from a Nomads trip to the Broken Heel Festival and Outback NSW in 2018; Travelling 1800 km on the Canning Stock Route; and Rock collecting and measurements in the Outback. Attendees are also invited to share photos and stories of their own Outback adventures. GRADE: Social - online presentation via Zoom.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The Soldiers in the Outback presentation will be from John Tr, an ex-army officer, documenting a trip across the Outback in 1977 when he was aged 27 (and the soldiers under his command were mainly 19 or 20 year olds). Beware: Some of the soldiers are shirtless! The Nomads camping trip to Outback NSW in September 2018 included attending the Broken Heel Festival and visiting Silverton, Mungo National Park, Mutawinji National Park, White Cliffs (an opal mining town, where we stayed in an underground hotel) and much more. The Travelling 1800 km on the Canning Stock Route presentation from Roger H. will provide some history, outline the logistics to help you do it yourself, and show some pics to give an idea what it is like. The Rock collecting and measurements in the Outback presentation from Robert H. will include photos/short video on doing geological / geophysical field work from the Great Victoria Desert to the Darling Downs. In addition to the above presentations, attendees are invited to share mementos of their own travels in Outback Australia - photos, videos, stories - anything you think might be of interest to other attendees. Try to keep these "show and tell" sessions relatively short - between 5 and 10 minutes per theme - there should be opportunities for you to present multiple sessions if you wish. The use of Zoom lends itself extremely well to this type of presentation - you can either share your own computer screen with the attendees (you will be instructed how to do that if you've never done it before), or you can email newsletter@nomads.org.au to organise having us display the materials for you, leaving you free to explain them. If you plan to present some materials on the night, it would be helpful if you sent a quick note to newsletter@nomads.org.au to help with planning the night. BOOKING: By 5pm on Friday 24th September.
