Wailing At The Full Moon Night Walk - Yarra Bend National Park, Fairfield: POSTPONED
Fairfield Cricket Club
19:30 – 22:00
** PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT CANNOT PROCEED AT PRESENT DUE TO THE EXTENSION OF LOCKDOWN #6 ** Here is an opportunity to "frock up" in your best winter outfits and head outdoors. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy, approximately 8 km, circuit walk.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The August 2021 full moon is due to be observed in Melbourne on Sunday 22 August, so we will venture out on Sunday night to take advantage of that. Winter provides the best possibility of clear skies to maximise viewing the stunning moonlight. Yarra Bend Park provides an area with minimal artificial light thus maximising the impact of moonlight. The surface for this walk is 100 per cent pavement or compacted “blue metal”. Totally flat or undulating except for two small “huff and puff” inclines: 1) from Kane’s Bridge up to The Boulevard, and 2) from the Water Pipe Bridge up past the Pavilion at Fairfield Park. The walk will commence at the car park and head south along Yarra Bend Road past the old Fairfield Hospital (now Melbourne Polytechnic) to cross the Yarra at Kane’s bridge. The walk will then proceed along The Boulevard in Kew past Bellbird Park (home to the Fruit Bats), crossing the Eastern Freeway; an area which is a “hot spot” for watching New Years Eve fireworks. Crossing the Yarra River via the Water Pipe Bridge we will re-enter Fairfield Park. BOOKING: By Friday 20th August. To register, click on Get Tickets. Unsure if you've already booked? Click View my bookings. NOMADS COVIDSAFE CHECKLIST: Checklist 210822: Wailing At The Full Moon Night Walk. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 7:30pm at the car park opposite the Fairfield Cricket Club Rooms and Oval, Lot 113C Yarra Bend Rd, Fairfield. Access this from Yarra Bend Road. MAP REFERENCE: Melway map 30 grid H12 | Google map goo.gl/maps/EE9kCEsq3a4bood46.  TRANSPORT: Dennis Railway Station (Hurstbridge Line) is nearby. If coming from Dennis Railway Station head south along Victoria Rd and Jeffrey St, turn right into Heidelberg Rd (200m only) then left into Yarra Bend Rd. Collection from Dennis Station is possible if pre-arranged. WHAT TO BRING: Suitable clothing for a night-time event that will see the temperature drop. Comfortable walking boots/shoes and dress according to the weather forecast. Bring a torch; preferably one you can wear on your head. Make sure you have a 1 litre (minimum) water bottle with you. Altona to Williamstown Walk: ** POSTPONED
Altona Station
10:56 – 15:00
Enjoy a coastal winter walk in Melbourne's western suburbs, ensuring you're well rugged up to appreciate the variety of scenery and sites on offer. ** This event cannot proceed at present due to the extension of Lockdown #6 ** GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy 11 km point-to-point walk accessed by Metro train.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This walk follows the coast from Altona Pier to Point Gellibrand at Williamstown. Along the way we will pass through Altona Coastal Park on the site of the former Williamstown Racecourse, Jawbone Nature Conservation Reserve, Williamstown Beach and Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park. A large amount of coastal birdlife can be observed in the area. The coastal salt marsh ecosystems we pass by are unusual to find so close to a major city. The industrial, residential and boating activities of the area add to the variation of landscapes to be observed throughout the walk. Cafes at Altona and Williamstown Beach provide options for a warming coffee at the start or near to the end of our walk.  Starting from Altona Pier, the walk follows waterfront walkways in the direction of Williamstown and Melbourne through a mixture of interesting urban, coastal, wetland and parkland environments, with the sea always in sight. There are two more coffee/food opportunities to be had before reaching Williamstown station where we'll catch a Flinders Street / Frankston train.  BOOKING: By Thursday 19th August. To register, click on Get Tickets. View my bookings (log in required). Victorian Goldfields Railway Excursion - Castlemaine to Maldon (return)
Castlemaine Station
11:15 – 17:24
** NOTE: This event will be able to proceed on Sunday 1st August but with some limitations on capacity, and with individual group sizes of 10 or less. It is now FULLY BOOKED. ** Travel back in time with the Victorian Goldfields Railway. Enjoy a steam train ride from Castlemaine to Maldon in elegant Victorian-era carriages, have lunch in historic Maldon, itself a snapshot of life in the 1850s, then return to Castlemaine via steam train. V/Line trains connect between Castlemaine and Southern Cross Station. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy social excursion, with strolls around historic Maldon. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Enjoy a social outing with Nomads friends in Victoria's goldfields region. For most, the excursion will start from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne, to catch a V/Line train to Castlemaine, though you can also drive to Castlemaine to meet us there at the railway station. In Castlemaine, we'll board the elegant carriages of the steam train, departing at 11:30am to travel to the historic town of Maldon, where the 1850s streetscape has featured in several period films and documentaries (e.g. Romulus, My Father [2007] featuring Eric Bana). In Maldon we'll have 2.5 hours to have lunch and explore the Maldon old town, where the 1850s streetscape looks much as it did within the 1850s gold rush era. At 2:45pm the steam train will begin the return journey to Castlemaine.  Castlemaine still retains many of its fine Gold Rush buildings, with the town offering a range of cafes, hotels and restaurants and an extensive range of shops. There is excellent coffee available from the station kiosk and there's a historical railway memorabilia display that you'll be able to visit while waiting for departure of the steam train. You'll also be able to take some photos of the steam train at the platform. Maldon, Australia's first notable town, offers a range of antique, specialty shops and cafes. Many places of interest and relics of the gold era are within easy reach of Maldon Railway Station.  Disabled access is available on the VGR train, but there are no toilet facilities on board. Toilet facilities with disabled access are available at both Castlemaine and Maldon railway stations. First Class seats are limited, and most of the Nomads group will be travelling in Excursion Class. If it's important to you that you get a First Class seat, please email LeaderAlanD.thenomadsinc@mail.tidyhq.com ASAP to pre-allocate your seats. If no first class seats are available, you can choose to have your booking refunded or converted to excursion class, with refund of the difference. The cost for this event will be the same for Nomads members and visitors. BOOKING: By Friday 30th July. To book, click on Get Tickets.  Unsure if you've already booked? Click View my bookings.
